CALIFORNIA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM PRESENTS
STALWART: THE ART OF CHRISTOPHER CARTER
MARCH 17 MAY 15, 2011
Los Angeles, CA March 10, 2011 Bay Area | Miami artist Christopher Carter has created an impressive body of work in a variety of disciplines and media. He creates still and kinetic/interactive sculpture, paintings, woodcuts, and various types of installations. Born in Albuquerque, NM and raised in Boston, MA, his work reflects his African-American, Native and European heritage.
Charmaine Jefferson, Executive Director of the California African American Museum says: Christopher Carters sculptures and assemblages are powerful and eloquent, filled with vibrant yet sober energy. He reflects on personal journeys while dealing with conflict, hidden meanings and the treatment of the earth. His unique way of exploring the concepts of nation and identity from an historical and also contemporary point of view will add a further dimension to CAAM's exhibits for 2011.
Carters sculptures are created from 19th century lumber, drawing connections between 19th century America and 21st century current events. The artist adds: The work collected for the show, STALWART, represents ideas I have wrestled with since 2003. The history inherent in the found object drive the impact of the sculpture. I consider many of my sculptures as iterations of a genre which I continue to explore.
Christopher Carters show will be on display at the CAAM from March 17 through May 15, 2011. The following events are scheduled during the run of the show:
A book/catalog signing will be held on Saturday, March 19, from 3:00 to 4:45 pm A walk-through with the artist is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2:15 pm The California African American Museum (CAAM) researches, collects, preserves and interprets for public enrichment the history, art and culture of African Americans.
