"The idea of a hidden history informs my sculptural work. Using found objects, I'm inspired in part by the very nature and uniqueness of the object themselves. While mining the materials; comparisons and concepts are unearthed and explored, suggesting meaning and relevance when pushed to a sculptural form."- Christopher Carter
Born in New Mexico and raised in Boston, as a 15 year old student at the renowned Interlochen Arts Academy, Carter began to imagine a career an artist.
He went on to pursue a BFA from MICA [Maryland Institute College of Art], with a specialization in printmaking, multi-media animation and bronze casting/foundry* (*in Cortona, Italy). During graduate school at University of California, Berkeley, where he received his MFA in 1995, his interest in sculpture intensified.
In 2002, Carter spent a summer living in New Zealand and studying the art of the Maori people. His own multi-ethnic background had earlier drawn him to African-American and Native American wood carving traditions. A series of monumental carved columns incised with abstract animistic imagery in low relief were the result of this exploration. The work titled, "Totemic Columns", was acquired for the re-opening of the $60Mil+ renovated
Grand Rapids Arts Museum in Michigan for permanent display in their ground floor atrium. The GRAM is the first LEED certified museum in the world and Carter's extensive use of salvaged materials including reclaimed woods + found objects made for a perfect relationship.
Carter spent a number of years teaching as a Visiting Lecturer/Professor at the University of California , Berkeley and Art Institute of San Francisco , respectively.
He continues to work as an illustrator/storyboard artist/animator and at present is the Creative Director of
Maverix Studios in San Francisco. Maverix creates animation for film, tv and video games. Their projects include work for HBO, Hewlett Packard, National Geographic, and Miramax.
Christopher's current series, "Bound", is inspired by materials salvaged from a barn dating back to the early 1800's which manufactured munitions for the war of 1812. Over the past few years, Christopher completed a number of private commissions and continues to actively show his work. He has studios in Miami, Fl and Oakland/SF Bay area and lives with his wife,Tracey, and daughter, Skylar.
